About the Program
A recent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
("CAFC") has been characterized as changing the law regarding patent
protection for business methods. This decision, State Street Bank & Trust Co.
v. Signature Financial Group, held that patent protection is available for processes used in administering mutual funds. This decision can lead to a flood of
financial and other business method patents.
This program will focus on ways to adapt to a legal and business environment
that may see a dramatic increase in this form of patent activity.
The ramifications of State Street will be addressed along with other
Federal Court decisions regarding computer software, business strategies and patent
enforcement. The role of patents and the Internet, banking and securities industries
will also be discussed. International protection of business methods will be examined.
